Challenges of Cybersecurity in Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is bringing a lot of changes and technological advances in the way companies operate. However, these developments have also brought new challenges, especially regarding the security of systems and data.

New technological trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, the cloud, robotics and artificial intelligence, are being massively implemented in companies. They simplify and streamline processes and represent a clear improvement in efficiency and productivity thanks to automation.

But the great technological transformation and digitalization has also led to the emerging of new cybersecurity risks. Cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure have been on the rise, taking advantage of systems' lack of protection.

Industries need to be fully aware of the risks and the financial impact of a cyber-attack of this scale. Therefore, it is important to take appropriate measures, many of which are common sense. Here are some of the main recommendations:

  • Ensure that all devices and systems are up-to-date with the latest security fixes.
  • Implement an incident response plan to address any potential threats.
  • Conduct a risk analysis and assess the critical points of the network to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Train all staff on cybersecurity best practices and the use of devices and systems.
  • Keep a record of all devices and systems connected to the network to simplify the identification of possible threats.
  • Invest in cybersecurity solutions for protection. This includes, a threat analysis software, firewalls, backups, etc.
